Renewing the Foundations

This year, Sydney Rudolf Steiner College tutors completed a thorough revamp of one of the flagship Foundation in Rudolf Steiner Education (DE02) modules, Introduction to Steiner Education. Ex-Kamaroi teacher, David Rodely, helped refocus the module reader and assignments, making the content more practical and relevant to contemporary teachers.

Our College students already obtain free access to the SEA curriculum but our new course redesign meant they were pushed a little to get familiar with the SEA curriculum and work with it, to design main lesson scaffolds and prepare a thorough, peer-reviewed plan for a three week main lesson. So although there was still plenty of philosophical readings to get through, students soon found themselves bridging theory and practice with assignments that asked for both.

Also, on the final day of our Seminar, the group divided into focus main lesson workshops: The Fables, The Saints, Human and Animal, Ancient Rome, The Middle Ages and worked with specialist tutors who mentored them, providing a planning framework for running a 3 week main lesson block. It was a fabulous, hands-on finale to a great week of professional development.

‘I have been studying the Foundations in Rudolf Steiner Education, the DE02. In early October we had our week-long seminar which turned out to be a real cracker. It was much more than a Seminar. We all received loads of practical ideas for structuring main lessons in the classroom. As part of our pre-Seminar work we had to research a main lesson, use the SEA curriculum and many other resources to produce a scaffold of a 3 week Main Lesson Plan. It was a lot of work and it really got us thinking. It pushed me out of my comfort zone but I learnt so, so much.  Then, during our week together, experienced Steiner teachers helped us fill out our scaffold into a very comprehensive Main Lesson. It was a real confidence booster to be able to do this thoroughly. Im a teacher with decades of experience but am now transitioning into Steiner teaching. This course has been so relevant to what goes on in an actual classroom. I’m now assisting in a classroom at a Sydney Steiner school and know this course has prepared me for my new work. Thanks to all who made this course so practical. I tell everyone I know what a great course its been!’. Susan Ansell.

Another big change to our tried and true module, Introduction to Steiner Education, was to ask Lou Harvey-Zahra to present it. Lou is well known as a parenting educator but we also know her other significant backstory. Lou has been a teacher for over 25 years and has taught in kindergarten, primary, special needs and Steiner-Waldorf schools. And she’s a fabulous presenter, empowering teachers and explaining Steiner education in a way that is accessible and practical, whilst imparting Steiner’s wisdom throughout.

And so many NESA hours…

Lou’s lectures were well stocked with NESA hours. Foundations in Rudolf Steiner Education (DE02) students completed Positive Discipline, Understanding the 4 Temperaments, Stages of Child Development Matched with the Steiner Curriculum, the Heads, Heart and Hands Approach to help notch up well over 10 hours of NESA credit.

In 2020, schools can engage Lou to provide all these courses as in-service PD or teachers can join us in Sydney in Sept 28-30 and do Lou’s courses at our Foundations in Rudolf Steiner Education course Seminar at Glenaeon.

And Lou’s favourite Steiner quote for the Foundation students was..

“Watch for yourself and observe the difference – first when you approach a child more or less indifferently, and then again when you approach him with real love. As soon as you approach with real love, at once your educating becomes effective, becomes a thing of power.” – Rudolf Steiner (Curative Education, Lecture 12).
