Course Outline

This course enables primary school teachers to create teaching strategies for literacy by using creative writing as a methodology, using their knowledge of students’ developmental context as a base from which to create well structured, effective programs that engage students, improve learning outcomes and support literacy development. In this course, an explicit and progressive set of exercises, plus peer and self-review, enable a collaborative approach to teaching and learning that builds on students’ current abilities, understanding that in any given year there is a five to six-year difference in academic capability. The collaborative approach helps the students understand how to progress from their current skill level. The hands-on exercises in creative writing provide teachers with tools and skills to create well-structured, progressive programs in literacy that promote optimum learning not dependent on students in a class being at the same developmental stage.
