2018 NAPLAN Results Show Australian High School Students are Falling Behind in Writing

Declining results in the writing capacity of Australian high schoolers comes as no surprise to Dr Shelley Davidow. Internationally recognised author, educator and lecturer is clearly concerned.

“The way English is taught in most schools is soulless, mechanical and linear, it’s akin to being shown how to join the dots. There’s no engagement with the craft of writing, of rejoicing in words, patterns, the crafting capacity of language and its impact. Children disengage and these results reveal just that’.
What about learning how to write persuasively, how to structure an essay, its form and its content, isn’t that important?

“Form and content has its place in writing an essay under exam conditions. However these are not the writing skills young people will need in a workplace. Understanding the complex craft of writing is a skill they will need. Knowing how words work to engage audiences is a highly sought after skill and most workplaces lack accomplished writers’, says Shelley.

Greta Solomon, Forbes writing contributor concurs, ‘Having excellent writing skills can make you an indispensable member of your team or company. And it’s one of the best ways to remain consistently employable – no matter your profession’.

Shelley says, “Look at the way the world is going and the impact of words. Look at what Trump does on Twitter! We need to encourage a new generation of writers that will have the skills to retaliate with their writing”.

Dr Shelley Davidow will be running a NESA accredited workshop, ‘Approaching Literacy through Creative Writing, Years 7-12’ at Sydney Rudolf Steiner House on Thursday 25thof October. Shelley’s courses are in high demand. Sydney Rudolf Steiner College is excited to be able to host this vital course. Book in early to avoid missing out.
